TOFD (TIME OF FLIGHT DIFFRACTION)
Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is a highly sensitive and accurate non-destructive testing (NDT) method employed by Amerapex to inspect welds for defects. Using a tandem probe system with a pitch-catch technique, TOFD effectively detects transverse-type defects and provides precise sizing of both the length and height of flaws. TOFD is commonly used in combination with phased array testing to confirm defect locations and actual size, and it serves as the primary screening method for detecting High Temperature Hydrogen Attack (HTHA).
This technique offers reliable, real-time assessments without requiring plant shutdowns and eliminates radiation exposure, providing a safe, efficient method for maintaining asset integrity. Inspection data can be digitally stored for documentation and analysis, ensuring accurate and repeatable results.
TIME OF FLIGHT DIFFRACTION (TOFD) KEY ADVANTAGES:
- No radiation
- Inspection data can be digitally stored
- Real-time inspection results
- Sensitive to a wide range of weld defects
- Accurate sizing of defects
- Extremely fast data collection when used as a stand-alone technique
