Positive Material Identification (PMI)

X-Ray Fluorescence Analyzer

Positive Material Identification (PMI) is a non-destructive method used to recognize the metallic composition of a metal using instruments like x-ray fluorescence (XRF) without doing any alterations the substance being tested. This information is essential to ensure material meets specifications for best performance.

Materials placed in critical process lines are designed to withstand certain temperature ranges, corrosion resistance, and yield strength. If improper metals are inadvertently placed into the wrong process lines, catastrophic events may take place. It is imperative your facility knows which metals and weld materials are within proper design specifications.

With PMI the alloy composition, and thus the identity of materials, can be determined. This method is particularly useful for high-quality metals like stainless steel and high alloy metal. Using an X-Ray Fluorescence Analyzer (XFR) we can rapidly verify alloys in seconds, recover lost material traceability, isolate finished welds to validate filler material and dilution rates, and confirm the integrity of piping, valves and reaction vessels. This can all be done without disassembling a unit or shutting down operations.

PMI can be used when:

  • working with a part that is part of an assembly
  • a sample cannot be cut for testing
  • a mixed lot is suspected
  • you are unsure of samples too costly to destroy
  • testing must be done on-site
  • product materials need to be identified
  • you need to identify light, trace, and tramp elements

This particular inspection method can be performed during construction stage or while in service (Retro PMI). When you combine it with other NDT methods, Amerapex is able to find welds in long runs of piping, saving you time and money on craft support. A comprehensive report with any findings will be available as soon as the project is completed. There is no wait time after the inspection is completed, Amerapex innovative method of tracking data and reporting will have your information ready the same day or next day from when the project is complete so that it can then be implemented into PCMS, UltraPipe, or any other mechanical integrity software.
